Harpers Ferry, West Virginia

...Harpers Ferry, West Virginia at Summer...
I have visited Harpers Ferry in West Virginia in the summer a couple of times, once with parents and then later with one of my brothers.

This is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley

I enjoyed walking around the old town and seeing the John Brown Fort which is still standing in Harpers Ferry. It is 247 feet above sea level at Potomoc River level and 484 feet above sea level. It is the lowest point in the state of West Virginia. It is an 18th century town and John Brown's raid was in 1859.

Harper's Ferry was founded by Robert Harper in 1734.  He built a cabin, planted a garden and established a ferry concession across the Potomac River.  In 1796 Congress ordered an arsenal established at Harpers Ferry and the sleepy village became a busy community of 3,000 people.

John Brown arrived on the scene during the summer of 1859.  He established a headquarters for himself and his men at the Kenney farm on the Maryland side of the Potomac River.  He marched into Harpers Ferry while the town slept, captured and imprisoned two watchmen, and took possession of the government arsenal companies of militia from Charles Town, Martinsburg, Shepherdstown, and Winchester and other communities converged upon the town and surrounded the arsenal.

Colonel Robert E. Lee and Lieutenant, J.E.B. Stuart arrived from Washington with 90 marines.  At daybreak, Brown refused to surrender, the marines stormed the arsenal.  During the raid 10 of Brown's command were killed, 4 townsmen and 1 marine.

John Brown was indicted for murder, treason against Virginia and was tried and hanged at Charles Town, West Virginia.

Many severe battles raged at Harpers Ferry throughtout the war and the railroad bridge was destroyed and rebuilt many times and by the end of the war the town was in ruins.  The town has since developed as a fashionable gathering place for those attracted by the natural beauty of the setting and for the curious who wish to see the scene of John Brown's raid.

This scene of the mountains with fog, a deer coming to the stream for a drink of water and the early morning was inspiring to capture on canvas.  Mountains are always inspiring for me to paint and have enjoyed painting them as well as wildlife.  We have visited the Rocky Mountains a couple of times.
I enjoy painting the mountains of Colorado and its beauty.

This is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley.  It is framed with a dark wood frame with some gold in the frame.

...Wintertime At The Cabin...
This is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley.  I did something similar to this painting several years ago and wanted to do it somewhat different this time.

I also like the wintertime since I grew up in West Virginia where we had snow on the ground in Winter.  To be inside the cabin reading a good book and listening to the crackling sound of the fire in the fireplace sounds very good when it is cold outside.

...Serenity...
This seascape has lots of blues but a peaceful, relaxing scene with seagulls for a interesting setting.

The seascape is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley and framed with a silver wood frame.

Seascapes are usually peaceful unless you have waves crashing over rocks.  These are very peaceful to look at and enjoy.

...Natural Bridge, Virginia...
I have taken several photo's of the natural bridge in Virginia.   I enjoyed visiting this natural rock bridge when I was a teenager a couple of times.

This is God's work of art and is one of the seven wonders of the world. I wanted to paint it in the autumn season so the shades of the leaves would be against the bridge.

This is an orignial oil painting by Ruth Housley and framed with a brown wood frame.

...Mountain Wilderness...
I painted a mountain wilderness scene with an elk in the backgound for a natural setting. The blue of the mountains compliment the orange of the autumn trees. This was an enjoyment to paint.

...Mountain Splendor...
I took pictures of the Rocky Mountains and composed this painting from being at Rocky Mountain National Park years ago. We did some hiking while there and some deer came down in the area where we were staying in cabins.  We also took a hike and while we were up in the mountains it sleeted rain pellets on my husband and I.  We had fun while we were there and would like to go back some time.

I enjoy the mountains with the aspens as well as  the evergreen trees. I like to put wildlife in my paintings for added interest.  The mountains are so beautiful and enjoy painting them as well as seeing them.

...Magnolias...
I painted a white magnolia in a workshop and then wanted to do another one in pink.   Magnolias are so pretty in the springtime and the Magnolia trees really get big blossoms on them.
The blossoms are very beautiful when a tree is in full bloom.
This is framed with a gold  leaf wood frame and original oil painting by Ruth Housley.

...Italian Wine With Fruit...
I did this painting by setting up some still life settings.

The darkness of the background makes the objects in the still life stand out with the shadows and has an interesting composition.  It is a bold but simple setting for this still life.

This is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley and framed with a dark wood frame with hints of gold.

...Farm In Hill Country, Texas...
This cabin is in the Texas hill country and still standing. It is located on the many acres that LBJohnson owned.  Former past President of the United States.

This cabin was the Danz Cabin on the  property.  There are longhorns, and deer as well as other wildlife on the acreage.  The year that we visited the LBJ property was the spring we did not have very many bluebonnets blooming.

I enjoy taking photo's of sunsets and use some of them in my landscapes or seascapes.

This sunset scene was  composed after making a composite of some of the photo sunsets   I used oranges, pinks and blues, with the dark of the water made it a beautiful sunset painting.

...Azaleas and Piney Woods, Nacogdoches, Texas...
My husband and I went to East Texas during March, 2005 and I took several photos of the azaleas and piney woods at Nacogdoches.  The flowers were so beautiful, in full color as well as the dogwood which was pink and while.  The evergreen trees with the flowers were picturesque. The colors of the azaleas were red, light pink, darker pinks, white and yellow.

I enjoyed this trip and would like to go back to East Texas some day and see some different subjects.

...Autumn at Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia
This is an original oil painting by Ruth Housley.  I visited the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia with family when I was a teenager.  Also visited relatives that lived near Richmond, Virginia.  We visited the relatives each summer.

I remember one time we were on the Blue Ridge Parkway and we had car trouble and my aunt and uncle were with us and we had someone to come by and help us.  Praise the Lord!

I wanted to paint the autumn season of the year with the changing of the leaves on the trees against the blue of the mountains and put a deer in the painting to add interest.

This painting is framed with a gold trim wood frame.
